Scarlett Johansson Believes She Was Groomed In A Certain Way Because Of Hollywood’s Standards

Looking back on the start of her career, Scarlett Johansson believes that she was groomed to star in films with overly sexualized characters. The actress who has a new skin care line believes that there is a certain pull for settling for those types of roles that she was being considered for; especially that it is working for her. It did help in building her career, but she wasn’t really pleased with the way things are since she wanted to do more roles.

The two-time Oscar nominee knew she needed to do something if she wants to play the roles she desires. Thankfully her agent was able to help her get better roles, and producers and directors are listening to her suggestions on writing some of her characters.

The actress succeeded in landing roles that will not objectify her as a woman. The actress who earned so much from the MCU franchise is set to star in the star-studded film Asteroid City alongside Margot Robbie, Bill Murray, Tom Hanks and Edward Norton which will be released on June 2023. She is also starring on the film My Mother’s Wedding directed by Kristin Scott Thomas where she will star alongside Sienna Miller and Emily Beecham.

Scarlett Johansson On Being Groomed To Be A Bombshell At A Young Age

During Scarlett Johansson’s guesting on the Table for Two with Bruce Bozzi podcast, she admitted that she felt groomed into becoming a bombshell at a young age. After she starred in the 2003 film Lost in Translation, she found herself playing a character that is the object of male desire. That same year, she also starred in Girl With the Pearl Earring, both of which was filmed when she was still a teenager.

Despite trying so hard to cultivate her own star in Hollywood, she couldn’t do anything about it. She recalls, “I did Lost in Translation and Girl With the Pearl Earring, and by that point, I was 18, 19, and I was coming into my own womanhood and learning my own desirability and sexuality.” She continued, “I was kind of being groomed in a way to be this, what you call this ‘bombshell’ type of actor.”

Scarlett Johansson Got Typecast By Hollywood

The actress said that she felt like she could not get roles that she wanted because she was already typecast in these types of roles. She said “It would be easy to sit across from someone in that situation and go, ‘This is working.’ But for that kind of bombshell, you know, that burns bright and quick, and then it’s done, and you don’t have opportunity beyond that. It was an interesting, weird conundrum to be in, but it really came back to working at it and trying to carve a place in different projects and work in great ensembles.”

This is not the first time the actress has expressed her opinion on being sexualized in Hollywood. In October of this year, she also said on Dax Shepard’s podcast Armchair Expert that she was hyper sexualized as a young actress. The actress believes that the roles she got when she was just starting are far from her actual personality. The actress added that she was stuck on those types of roles. Since she was stuck on these roles, she initially thought that her career is ending soon.

She said, “I was playing the other woman and this object of desire and, you know, I suddenly found myself cornered in this place, like, I couldn’t get out of it.” She continued, “I kind of became objectified and pigeonholed in this way where I felt like I wasn’t getting offers for work for things that I wanted to do. I remember thinking to myself, ‘I think people think I’m 40 years old.’ It somehow stopped being something that was desirable and something that I was fighting against.”

Scarlett Johansson Changed The Course Of Her Career

The ex-wife of Ryan Reynolds also opened up about the change in perspective the moment she had children. The Black Widow actress believes that having children changed the way she views her career at this point. She explained that actors these days should choose a project that would satisfy them over anything else. The actress said “I think that’s an important lesson to teach girls and boys – to pursue work that is satisfying.” With the number of awards and recognition the actress had achieved so far, it’s pretty clear that it’s exactly what she did.

The actress said that it was her agent Bryan Lourd who helped her turn things around. Lourd helped the actress find a character that fits her vision. Although the bombshell roles are working pretty well for her career, she just wants to change the course of her career. The actress admitted that initially, her character Black Widow was written to be over-sexualized for Iron Man 2. The actress revealed that she worked with director Jon Favreau and Marvel studios head Kevin Feige to rewrite her character into something more progressive.
