Jessica Chastain, Anne Hathaway to Star in Psychological Thriller ‘Mothers’ Instinct’

“Mothers’ Instinct,” a psychological thriller starring Jessica Chastain and Anne Hathaway, will go on sale at the American Film Market next month.

Chastain and Hathaway will play best friends who live next door to each other and have perfect lawns, successful husbands, and sons the same age. In the 1960s, when the story takes place, a terrible accident breaks up the perfect peace between two sisters. Guilt, suspicion, and paranoia all work together to break up their close relationship.

The English-language remake of Olivier Msset-2018 Depsse’s film “Duelles,” which won nine Magritte Awards from the Belgian Academy, including best film and best director, will be directed by Olivier Msset-Depsse. The movie is based on Barbara Abel’s novel “Derrière la Haine.” The script is being changed by Sarah Conradt, who wrote “50 States of Fright.”

“It takes actors of the caliber of Jessica and Anne to show how complicated these two roles are,” Msset-Depse said. “The connection between a mother and her child is the strongest between any two people. When this bond is broken, it makes people question morality and even sanity as they know it. In the closed-door America of the 1960s, Mothers’ Instinct turns into a scary, high-pressure powder keg.

Chastain is producing the movie along with Kelly Carmichael from the actor’s Freckle Films, Paul Nelson at Mosaic, and Jacques-Henri Bronckart, who made “Duelles.” The project will be fully financed and executive produced by the company Anton. The company’s founder and CEO, Sébastien Raybaud, and John Zois, who worked out the deal with CAA, will be in charge of the project.

The film’s financing was set up by CAA Media Finance, and Anton is also representing the project’s domestic rights. Cecile Gaget, who is Anton’s president of international production and distribution, will start selling their music all over the world at AFM, which starts online on November 9.

The next spy thriller with Chastain will be “The 355.” She just started filming “Scenes From a Marriage” with Oscar Isaac for HBO and just finished filming “The Eyes of Tammy Faye” with Andrew Garfield for Freckle Films. “The Help” and “Zero Dark Thirty” both put her in the running for an Oscar. She is represented by CAA, Paul Nelson at Mosaic, and Hansen, Jacobson, Teller, Hoberman, Newman, Warren, Richman, Rush, Kaller, and Gellman.

Hathaway is currently in “The Witches,” a movie directed by Robert Zemeckis in which she plays a lead role. She was nominated for “Rachel Getting Married” and won an Oscar for her role in “Les Miserables.” Hathaway is represented by CAA, Suzan Bymel at Management 360, and Sloane, Offer, Weber & Dern. Line Hollywood was the first to tell the news.
